Lion's Mane, Cordyceps or Reishi: Which Mushroom for What

Functional mushrooms get sold as a single category, which is roughly like selling "herbs" as one product. Lion's mane and reishi have about as much in common functionally as rosemary and valerian. If you bought a mushroom supplement because mushrooms are supposed to be good for you, this is the guide for figuring out whether you bought the right one.

The short version

Notice that reishi and cordyceps point in opposite directions. Taking a blend containing both at 9pm, or both at 6am, means one of them is working against your intention. This is the single most common mistake with mushroom blends.

Lion's mane: the focus one

Lion's mane is the shaggy white mushroom that looks like a small waterfall. It is the one most people are actually looking for when they hear "mushrooms for the brain." It is traditionally used to support concentration, memory and mental clarity, and it has drawn the most research interest of any functional mushroom for cognitive support.

What it is not is a stimulant. It will not feel like caffeine and it is not supposed to. Like most of this category, it is a daily-over-weeks ingredient, not an acute one.

Cordyceps: the stamina one

Cordyceps is traditionally used to support physical energy, endurance and oxygen utilization, which is why it shows up constantly in pre-workout and athletic formulas. If your complaint is that you run out of gas partway through the afternoon or partway through a workout, cordyceps is the one in this family aimed at that.

One label note: Cordyceps militaris is what is almost always in supplements today. The wild-harvested Cordyceps sinensis is one of the most expensive biological materials on earth, and anything sold at a normal price claiming it is cultivated mycelium rather than the wild article.

Reishi: the calm one

Reishi is bitter, woody and has been used in traditional practice for centuries under names that translate to things like "mushroom of immortality." It is used to support calm, stress resilience and restful sleep. It is the evening member of the family. If a blend is making you feel wired rather than settled, reishi is not the reason.

The two label details that actually matter

1. Fruiting body or mycelium

The fruiting body is the mushroom itself, the part you would recognize. Mycelium is the root-like network it grows from, and in commercial production it is usually grown on grain. If a label says "mycelium on grain" or "myceliated biomass," a meaningful share of what you are paying for is the grain it grew on, because the two cannot be separated at harvest.

Neither is fraudulent, and mycelium has its own supporters. But a label that names the part is telling you something, and a label that does not name it is also telling you something.

2. Extract or powder

Mushroom cell walls are made of chitin, the same material as insect shells, and human digestion does not break it down well. Extraction does that work in advance. A ground raw powder is cheaper to produce and harder for your body to get anything out of. Look for the word extract on the panel.

Blend or single mushroom?

A single mushroom makes sense when you have one specific goal and want to know exactly what did or did not help. A blend makes sense for general daily support, which is what most people actually want, and it is far cheaper than buying six bottles.

Our Mushroom Complex is ten mushrooms in capsule form, with cordyceps, reishi, shiitake and lion's mane each named individually on the panel with their part specified. Our Organic Mushroom Complex Powder is seven organic mushrooms as extracts, all fruiting body or fruiting body plus mycelium and stated as such, with an added adaptogen blend of ashwagandha, ginseng and rhodiola. Both support immune defense, focus and steady natural energy.

Read our panels against anyone else's. That is the entire point of this article.
